Telfer School of Management Demonstrates High Financial Ethical Standards

On 08 February 2018, the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management was named winners of the 2018 CFA Society Toronto Ethics Challenge. The Toronto champions were led by Faculty Advisor Pouya Safi and included team members:  James Beaudoin, Aamena Chatoo, Christian Cotroneo, Natalie Dokmajian, and Nicholas Pelchat.  This year’s winning team demonstrated their ability to expertly negotiate ethical dilemmas in a real-life investment scenario and presented their case to a panel of seasoned investment professionals.

"Having the opportunity to represent the University of Ottawa's Telfer School of Management at the 2018 CFA Society Toronto Ethics Challenge was an unforgettable experience. It proved hard work pays off and surrounding yourself with the right people can really bring the best out of a team,” said team member Christian Cotroneo.

The Ethics Challenge is a Canada wide competition, designed to increase students’ awareness of the ethical dilemmas they may encounter as future investment management practitioners. Student teams are given an ethics case to study and evaluate. Each team then presents its analysis and recommendations, to a panel of judges, selected by the host CFA Society. Following a question and answer period with each team, the judges then select a winner. Their decision is based on the quality of the team’s understanding of the ethical issues involved, quality of their analysis, presentation, and responses to the judges questions.

“The 2018 CFA Society Toronto Ethics Challenge was a demanding and thought-provoking exercise for the four participating schools and they definitely rose to the challenge! The judges were amazed at how reflective and thorough the students were in identifying key ethical considerations and utilizing the CFA Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct in assessing the case. Even better, the students provided practical solutions to address the ethical infractions which showed real learning. I enjoyed participating and am optimistic that the students will utilize these valuable ethical learnings throughout their professional careers,” said Aaron Vale, CFA one of the competition’s judges.

This year’s competing teams include students from University of Ottawa, Telfer School of Management, Queen’s University, Smith School of Business, Ryerson University, Ted Rogers School of Management, and York University, Schulich School of Business.

Telfer School of Management will be advancing to the nation level of the competition at the 2018 CFA Societies Canada Ethics Challenge on 03 May 2018 in Vancouver, British Columbia.  This competition will include local winners from chapters of CFA Societies across Canada.
