Shopify Selected for the CFA Society Toronto and CFA Society Ottawa’s Research Challenge

TORONTO – October 14, 2016 – Shopify, the leading cloud-based, multichannel Commerce platform designed for small- and medium-sized businesses, has been selected as the company to be researched and analyzed for CFA Society Toronto and CFA Society Ottawa in the local CFA Institute Research Challenge. Ontario university student teams taking part in the local competition will prepare equity research reports on this Canadian (TSX) and American (NYSE) listed company that will be reviewed and scored by financial industry professionals.

"We are pleased to support the CFA Society's efforts in developing the next generation of Canadian finance professionals," said Russ Jones, CFO of Shopify.  "We look forward to working with the contestants as they evaluate Shopify's investment considerations."

The CFA Institute Research Challenge celebrates its 11th year anniversary this season. It is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students work in teams to research and analyze a publicly traded company, and each team writes a research report on their assigned company with a buy, sell, or hold recommendation.

Four teams will be chosen to move on to the local finals in Toronto in February 2017. Teams that progress to local, regional and global finals must present and defend their analysis to a panel of industry professionals. Students learn from experienced industry experts and peers from the world’s top business schools. This year’s competitions culminate in Prague, Czech Republic for the global final in April 2017.

“Last year, we were proud to provide mentorship and guidance for the student team from the University of Waterloo in helping them earn their title as global champions. CFA Society Toronto embraces the opportunity to have local students learn from Shopify Inc, one of Canada’s fastest-growing public companies,” said Sue Lemon, CEO, CFA Society Toronto.
