The following types of membership are offered by CFA Society Toronto:

Application Process

All applications (except associate) are first processed by CFA Institute then sent to the Toronto Society in a monthly batch.  Applications are then reviewed by the CFA Society Toronto Membership Committee and submitted for approval by the Board of Directors at the monthly meeting.  Approved applicants will receive notification by mail once their membership is activated. Once approved applicants will go online to pay their dues and sign their professional conduct statements (activating their membership).  All activated CFA Society Toronto memberships are uploaded into CFA Society Toronto’s system bi-weekly, newly activated members will then receive notification by e-mail from CFA Society Toronto. 


Regular Membership

To become a regular member, applicants must meet all of the criteria listed below:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or have equivalent education or work experience.
  • Have attained one or more of the following:
  • Agree to adhere to and sign the Member's Agreement, a Professional Conduct Statement, and any additional documentation requested by CFA Institute.
  • Applicants require professional references: Three professional references are required unless you have a reference from a regular member of the society to which you are applying. In that case, two professional references are required. Supervisor references are preferred. When selecting your references, please note that they will be required to comment on your work experience and professional character. Select individuals who can attest to your responsibilities related to the investment decision-making process.

Affiliate Membership

To become an affiliate member, applicants must meet all of the criteria listed below:

  • At the time of application have attained a minimum of 12 months of acceptable professional work experience and passage of Level I of the CFA examination
  • Agree to adhere to and sign the Member's Agreement, a Professional Conduct Statement, and any additional documentation requested by CFA Institute.
  • Applicants require professional references: Three professional references are required unless you have a reference from a regular member of the society to which you are applying. In that case, two professional references are required. Supervisor references are preferred. When selecting your references, please note that they will be required to comment on your work experience and professional character. Select individuals who can attest to your responsibilities related to the investment decision-making process. 

Affiliate members have all of the benefits of regular membership except for voting and sponsoring individuals for membership.

  • Only open to individuals who do not qualify for regular or affiliate membership with the Toronto Society and CFA Institute

Prior to renewal qualifications are rechecked to ensure that an individual can remain as an associate member.  Once an individual qualifies for affiliate or regular membership associate membership cannot be renewed.

Associate members have all of the benefits of regular membership except for voting, sponsoring individuals for membership, and being a member of CFA Institute. 

Associate Membership Dues
Associate membership dues are paid directly to CFA Society Toronto.  Associate members are not members of the CFA Institute.  The activation period for the 2015-2016 membership year is 1 July - 31 March.  If you join from 1 April -30 June you are paying for the 2016-2017 year.  We do not prorate fees.


Retired Membership

To qualify to become a “Retired Member” of the Society, an applicant must be, at the time of application:

  • a Regular Member of the Society and CFA Institute;
  • over 65 years of age and not actively working in the profession; or 
  • complete a Retirement application form supplied by CFA Institute, stating that the member is currently unemployed (this form to be completed and signed annually until the applicant regains employment
  • hold membership for at least five years before applying for retired status

Retired members have the same rights as their previous level of membership and are eligible for reduced dues.


Acceptable Professional Work Experience is defined as activities which consist primarily of at least one of the following:

  • Evaluating or applying financial, economic, and/or statistical data as part of the investment decision-making process involving securities or similar investments, which include but are not limited to:
    • publicly traded and privately placed stocks, bonds, mortgages and their derivatives,
    • commodity-based derivatives,
    • mutual funds,
    • other investment assets, such as real estate and commodities, if these other investment assets are held as part of diversified, securities-oriented investment portfolios.
  • Supervising directly or indirectly those who practice such activities
  • Teaching such activities

Fees

CFA Society Toronto's and CFA Institute's membership year runs from July 1-June 30.  Fees are not prorated.
For regular and affiliate memberships CFA Institute collects dues on behalf of CFA Society Toronto.  Associate membership dues are paid directly to CFA Society Toronto. CFA Institute and CFA Society Toronto dues are waived for members who are aged 70 and older, beginning in in the 2016-2017 year.
Dues rates are charged in US$ in response to foreign exchange rates.

Regular and Affiliate Members

Have you been approved for CFA Institute and CFA Society Toronto memberships?
Join by logging into your CFA Institute account. Your first dues payment varies depending on the time you first joined. If you join between 1 May 2016 and 31 March 2017, your annual dues are valid through 30 June 2017. You will be billed again in May 2017 for the following year (2017-2018). If you join between 1 April 2017 and 30 April 2017, you will enjoy a complimentary membership through 30 June 2017. You will be billed in May 2017 for the following membership year (2017-2018).

Has your membership expired?
Please reactivate your membership through your CFA Institute account. Please note that both the CFA Institute and CFA Society Toronto's membership year runs from July 1-June 30, and that we do not prorate our dues. To reactivate for the 2016-2017 year please pay your dues after 1 July 2016.

Associate Members (Toronto only membership)

 If an associate member joins between 1 April 2016 and 30 June 2016 they will receive three months of complementary membership for the 2015-2016 year. Their dues will be applied to the 2016-2017 year and their membership will expire on 30 June 2017.
