Board Member Biographies

 

Dan C. Lavallee, CFA - Chair

Dan Lavallee is a Senior Portfolio Manager and Director of Public Equities at the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP). Dan has 17 years of capital markets experience, including roles in corporate finance, and has also published research on Canadian public companies. He holds a BA (Honours) in political science from the University of Western Ontario and has been a CFA charterholder since 2000. He joined the Society’s board in 2012.

 





                                                             

Pamela Steer, CFA - Vice Chair

Pamela Steer is the Acting CFO for the WSIB.  Pamela has over 15 years of senior management experience.  Her most recent role before joining the WSIB was as Chief Operating Officer of Wonga Canada.  Prior to Wonga, she was CFO at Fusenet, and Vice President of Finance at Redknee Solutions Inc.  Pamela is also active in the not-for-profit space, where she is currently Secretary/Treasurer and Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee for the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors in addition to her role as Vice-Chair of CFA Society Toronto.  Pamela has a Master of Accounting degree, is accredited as a Chartered Accountant (CPA, CA) and a Chartered Financial Analyst.  She recently completed the Rotman International Centre for Pension Management's Board Effectiveness Program and the Rotman Institute of Corporate Directors NFP Governance Essentials Program.






            

Anish Chopra, CA, CFA - Past Chair

Anish Chopra is a Managing Director and Portfolio Manager at TD Asset Management Inc.  He has over 15 years of experience at TD, including over a decade committed to managing proprietary funds. with knowledge in Canadian, U.S. and global equities as well as numerous absolute return strategies.  Anish is a member of the TD Wealth Asset Allocation Committee.  Prior to joining TDAM, he worked as a member of TD Securities' mergers and acquisitions group.  Anish holds a Masters of Accounting from the University of Waterloo, is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst and is a Chartered Business Valuator.  He earned his CFA charter in 2000.

 





                                                             

Brenda King, CPA, CA, CFA - Secretary-Treasurer

Brenda King has been the Treasurer at the Hospital for Sick Children for over fifteen years and is responsible for the treasury management, investments, banking relations, pension plan administration, and financial reporting.  Prior experience includes two years at a Real Estate Investment Management firm, seven years at McGill University, Department of Pension Management and five years at Deloitte & Touche as Audit Manager. Ms. King holds a Graduate Degree in Public Accountancy from McGill University and Bachelor of Commerce from Concordia University. Ms. King is a member of the Audit Committee, past Secretary-Treasurer and past Chair of the Finance Committee at CFA Society Toronto.

 






                                                           

Noam Silberstein, CFA - Chair, Outreach

Noam Silberstein is a Managing Director in the Investment Banking group at National Bank Financial, where he is part of the Diversified Industries team with responsibility for financings and M&A advisory in the agri-business, industrials, and technology sectors. Noam has over a decade of investment banking experience and was most recently at Wellington West, prior to the firm’s acquisition by National Bank. Noam has a B.Comm. from McGill University and earned his CFA charter in 2006. He speaks English, Spanish, French and Portuguese and serves on the board of directors of the Canadian Council for the Americas. Noam joined CFA Society Toronto’s Mentorship Committee in 2009 and was appointed Vice-Chair in July 2012.







        

Vadim Gracie, FCSI, CFA - Chair, Member Services

Vadim Gracie is a Director, Investment Risk Management at OMERS.  Previously he was a Principal in Risk Management and Principal in Asset Mix and Capital Markets Research at OMERS Capital Markets.  Before joining OMERS in 2007 he was a senior manager at Scotiabank.  Vadim has over 20 years of experience in the financial industry.  Vadim became Vice Chair of CFA Society Toronto's Derivatives & Risk Management Committee in 2011 and Chair of the Risk Management and Alternative Investments Committee in 2013.  He is also a past volunteer on the Membership Committee.  Vadim attained his Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2002 and became a Fellow of Canadian Securities Institute in 2007.

Marcus Turner, CFA - Chair, Programming

Marcus Turner is an investment principle at Morneau Shepell.  He consults on a wide variety of asset issues including asset allocation strategy, manager structure issues such as currency management, the use of alternative investments and building the right combination of managers.  He has over 20 years of progressively senior experience in capital markets.  Marcus has a BA in economics and actuarial science from the University of Toronto, is a member of the Global Association of Risk Professionals and a CFA charterholder.  Marcus is the Chair of the Portfolio Management Committee at CFA Society Toronto and provides frequent industry commentary on issues such as infrastructure in pension portfolios and managing extreme risks in a portfolio.

        

 





        
           

Amy Stephenson, MBA, CPA, CMA, CFA - Vice Chair, Programming

Amy Stephenson has over 20 years’ experience in the capital markets and managing public companies by providing strategic advice, finance and compliance services to public companies.  She is the CFO for Branson Corporate Services. Prior to this, Ms. Stephenson was CFO at Bedrocan Canada Inc. and Ceres Global Ag Corp. She was a business valuator at Evans & Evans and an equity research writer. She was non-member Council and Chair of the Audit Committee for the Association of Professional GeoScientists Ontario for 6 years and past Chair of the Continuing Education Committee.  Amy was lecturer at the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts (now CFA Society Toronto) lecture series for 10 years.  She is a CFA charterholder, a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CMA) and a member of the Financial Executive International (FEI). 






        

Alain Bergeron, M.Sc., CFA - Board Member at Large

Alain Bergeron is Senior Vice President, Investment Management and Head of Asset Allocation at Mackenzie Investments.  Previously he served as vice-president and head of Global Tactical Asset Allocation at CPP Investment Board, Traded derivatives at TD Securities, and taught undergraduate courses at HEC Montreal.  Alain is a recipient of the HEC 2009 Releve d'Excellence award which recognizes leadership excellence under 35.  Alain holds a BBA and M.Sc. both from HEC Montreal.  He holds the Chartered Market Technician and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.  He is on the Rotman Financial Services Advisory Board, the University of Waterloo Master of Quantitative Finance Advisory Board, has served as a committee member with The Toronto Financial Services Alliance and was a founding director of artsScene.

 





        

Richard Talbot, MBA, CA, CFA - Board Member at Large

In his most recent role Richard Talbot was Chief Operating Officer of RBC Capital Markets with global responsibility for all operational and administrative matters of the firm.  Prior, Richard was Co-Head of Global Research at RBC Capital Markets, where his primary focus was on equity, fixed income & currencies and credit research in Canada, Europe and Australia. He joined RBC Dominion Securities in 1993 and over the years gained recognition as the leading analyst in the sector. He was ranked the #1 telecom and cable analyst in Canada from 2000 to 2005 by Brendan Wood.  Richard holds an MBA from the Ivey School of Business at Western University, is a qualified Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Financial Analyst.

 





        

Bruce Grantier, CAIA, MBA, CFA - Board Member at Large

Bruce J. Grantier retired in 2008 after 16 years at Scotiabank, where he was managing director, pension assets. Previously he was chief strategist and head of fixed-income for Scotia Investment Management Ltd.  Bruce has written articles and reviews for industry publications including: Journal of Investment Management, Financial Analysts Journal, Canadian Investment Review and Benefits and Pension Monitor and publishes investment literature research reviews online through InvestorLit.

He earned his BASc. in industrial engineering at the University of Toronto, MBA at York University and is a CAIA and CFA charterholder.

Bruce is an active volunteer and board member for several industry associations, is a member of the Canadian Institute of Corporate Directors and joined CFA Society Toronto’s Portfolio Management committee in 2009.

 





        

Sue Lemon, CFA – CEO and Board Member

Sue is CFA Society Toronto’s Chief Executive Officer and leads the Society’s strategic direction which includes promoting high ethical standards in the financial industry and increasing the visibility of the charter with key partners in the financial community. An experienced and successful investment executive in fixed income markets Sue formed MSL Advisory Corp in 2008.

Through-out her career Sue has held progressively senior roles at Canada Trust, CT Investment Counsel, Nesbitt Thomson, and CIBC World Markets. Sue led her team at CIBC to a #1 ranking in the Greenwich sales survey. Sue is a Past President of the Society and has been an active volunteer for the past 20 years, notably mentoring young industry professionals. Sue is a cum laude graduate of Ryerson Business Management and earned her charter in 1989.
